What Is the ICSE Board? A Simple Guide for Parents – Future Kids Global School, Rajahmundry

Most families in Rajahmundry and East Godavari know the State Board and CBSE well. ICSE is less familiar, and parents often hear mixed opinions: it is too tough, it is only for English-speaking homes, it is not accepted for EAPCET.

This guide clears that up. It explains who runs ICSE, how it differs from ISC, what children study, how they are marked, and how the certificate is recognised. It is a starting point; the other ICSE articles on this blog go deeper into each topic.

QUICK ANSWER

ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education) is the Class 10 exam of CISCE, a national, non-government school board based in New Delhi. Its Class 12 exam is called ISC. ICSE is known for a wide syllabus, strong English, detailed science and internal assessment, and its certificates are recognised for higher studies and entrance exams across India.

AT A GLANCE

  • CISCE is the board; ICSE is its Class 10 exam; ISC is its Class 12 exam.

  • English Language and English Literature are both compulsory in ICSE.

  • Part of the marks in most subjects come from school-based internal assessment and project work.

  • ICSE and ISC are accepted by Indian universities and for national exams such as JEE, NEET and CUET.

CISCE, ICSE and ISC: what do the names mean?

The three names confuse many parents, so here they are in one place.

What it is

CISCE

Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations

The board, based in New Delhi, that affiliates schools and conducts the exams

ICSE

Indian Certificate of Secondary Education

The Class 10 board exam and the curriculum leading up to it

ISC

Indian School Certificate

The Class 12 board exam, taken after Classes 11 and 12

So when people say "an ICSE school", they usually mean a CISCE-affiliated school that teaches ICSE up to Class 10 and, in many cases, ISC in Classes 11 and 12. CISCE is a private, non-government board, but its certificates carry national recognition, like CBSE's.

CISCE schools teach in English medium and follow one common syllabus across the country. A child moving from an ICSE school in Rajahmundry to one in Hyderabad, Bengaluru or Delhi usually finds the same books and the same exam pattern, which makes transfers smoother.

What subjects do ICSE students study?

In Classes 9 and 10, ICSE subjects are arranged in groups. The exact list and rules are set by CISCE each year, so check the current regulations on cisce.org, but the broad pattern is:

  • Group I (compulsory): English (Language and Literature), a second language, and History, Civics and Geography.

  • Group II: a choice of subjects such as Mathematics, Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), Economics, Commercial Studies or another language.

  • Group III: one subject such as Computer Applications, Economic Applications, Art or Physical Education.

In ISC (Classes 11–12), students choose a stream combination, for example Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, or Accounts, Commerce and Economics. Our guide to ISC streams explains the options.

How are ICSE students assessed?

ICSE does not judge a child only on one final paper. Students write board exams at the end of Class 10, but schools also award internal assessment marks for projects, practicals and assignments. Practical subjects such as Computer Applications carry a larger internal share.

This changes how children study. They write long answers, run experiments, prepare project files and read whole books in English Literature. It builds the habit of explaining ideas in their own words, not only memorising them.

Pass marks, grading rules and exam dates are revised by CISCE from time to time. Always check the latest circular rather than relying on older information.

Is ICSE right for my child?

ICSE suits many children, but no board suits everyone. Consider these points honestly:

  1. English: ICSE has a heavy English component. Children from Telugu-speaking homes manage well with steady reading support.

  2. Workload: the syllabus is wide. A child needs regular study, not last-minute cramming.

  3. Entrance exams: ISC is accepted for JEE, NEET and EAPCET, but students should add NCERT-based practice. See ICSE for JEE and NEET.

  4. Mobility: CISCE schools exist across India and abroad, which helps families who may relocate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the full form of ICSE?

ICSE stands for Indian Certificate of Secondary Education. It is the Class 10 examination conducted by CISCE, the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi. The Class 12 exam of the same board is called ISC, the Indian School Certificate.

Is ICSE a government board?

No. CISCE is a private, non-government board. However, its ICSE and ISC certificates are recognised by Indian universities and accepted for national entrance exams, in the same way as CBSE and state board certificates.

What is the difference between ICSE and ISC?

ICSE is the Class 10 exam and ISC is the Class 12 exam. Both are conducted by CISCE. A student usually studies ICSE up to Class 10 and then continues in ISC for Classes 11 and 12, choosing a stream.

Is ICSE harder than CBSE?

ICSE has a wider syllabus and more English, so it feels heavier. CBSE is more compact and follows NCERT. Neither is simply harder; ICSE suits children who enjoy reading and detailed learning, with steady study habits.

Can ISC students write EAPCET, JEE and NEET?

Yes. ISC is a recognised Class 12 qualification, and students with the required subjects can apply for AP EAPCET, JEE and NEET. Always read the current year's eligibility notice on the official exam website.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the ICSE board?

Advantages: detailed syllabus, strong English, real weight for practicals and projects, and national recognition. Disadvantages: a heavier workload, more subjects, and the need to add NCERT practice for JEE or NEET. With good teaching and planning, most families find the strengths outweigh the effort.
