JEE Main vs JEE Advanced: Explained for Parents

When a child in Rajahmundry says "I want to write JEE", parents often assume it is one exam. In fact there are two: JEE Main and JEE Advanced. They have different conducting bodies, different difficulty and lead to different colleges.
This guide explains both in plain language, so you can follow your child's plans, ask the right questions and avoid missed deadlines. Exam rules change often, so treat this as a general guide and always confirm details on the official websites.
QUICK ANSWER JEE Main is a national exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes. It is also the qualifying step for JEE Advanced. JEE Advanced is conducted by one of the IITs each year and is the exam for admission to the IITs. Only top JEE Main scorers can write it. AT A GLANCE

JEE Main vs JEE Advanced at a glance
This table shows the broad differences. Numbers such as attempts, sessions and qualifying cut-offs can change, so check the current information bulletin before relying on them.
Point | JEE Main | JEE Advanced |
|---|---|---|
Conducted by | National Testing Agency (NTA) | One of the IITs, by rotation |
Who can write | Students who have passed or are in Class 12 with the required subjects | Only top-ranked JEE Main qualifiers |
Colleges it leads to | NITs, IIITs, GFTIs; also used by some state and private universities | IITs (and a few other institutes that use its rank) |
Sessions per year | Usually two (around January and April) | Once a year |
Mode | Computer-based | Computer-based |
Paper style | Fixed pattern of objective and numerical questions | Two compulsory papers; question types vary year to year |
Difficulty | Moderate to high; tests speed and accuracy | High; tests depth and multi-step reasoning |
How the two exam patterns differ
JEE Main: speed and coverage
The engineering paper in JEE Main covers Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Questions follow a published pattern of multiple-choice and numerical-answer questions, with negative marking for wrong multiple-choice answers. Success depends on covering the whole syllabus and working quickly without careless errors.
JEE Advanced: depth and thinking
JEE Advanced has two compulsory papers, both covering Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The organising IIT may change question types each year — for example, questions with more than one correct option, matching lists, or numerical answers — and the marking scheme changes with them. Students must truly understand concepts, because familiar ideas appear in unfamiliar forms.

Eligibility in simple terms
Eligibility rules are detailed and revised from time to time, so this is only a high-level summary:
Subjects: students need Physics and Mathematics in Class 12, along with Chemistry or another subject allowed by the notice. ISC students are eligible on the same basis as CBSE and State Board students.
Attempts: both exams limit how many years in a row a student can appear. JEE Advanced in particular allows only a small number of attempts.
Class 12 marks: admission to IITs, NITs and IIITs through JoSAA usually needs a minimum Class 12 percentage or a top-percentile position in the board, with relaxation for some categories.
Age: JEE Advanced has an age-related condition based on date of birth.
For exact rules, read the current bulletins on nta.ac.in and the official JEE Advanced website, and check counselling rules on the JoSAA website.
From exam to college: the steps
This is the usual order of events for a JEE aspirant in Class 12:
Register for JEE Main and write one or both sessions; the better score is generally used.
If the JEE Main rank is within the qualifying limit, register for JEE Advanced.
Write JEE Advanced, usually a few weeks after the board exams.
Register for JoSAA counselling and fill choices of institutes and branches.
Accept a seat in the allotment rounds and complete reporting.
In parallel, keep options open through AP EAPCET, BITSAT and other exams.
Most JEE Main candidates do not go on to the IITs, and that is normal. NITs, IIITs and good state colleges offer excellent engineering paths. Our AP EAPCET guide for ISC students covers the state route.
JEE preparation at FKGS
At Future Kids Global School in Rajamahendravaram, ISC MPC students prepare through the Achievers programme, which covers JEE Main and Advanced along with BITSAT, EAPCET (AP and TS), VITEEE and SRMJEE. It uses Kota-based academic planning, weekend tests with paper discussion and error analysis, and one-to-one study-hour support. Younger students can start with Ignite, the school's JEE Main and NEET foundation programme for Classes 6–10.
Alumni outcomes include Joy Koti (AIR 165, JEE Advanced) and Thamanna (IIT Mandi).
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced?
JEE Main is conducted by NTA and leads to NITs, IIITs and other central institutes. JEE Advanced is conducted by an IIT and leads to the IITs. JEE Main also acts as the qualifying exam, since only its top scorers can write JEE Advanced.
Can I get into an IIT with only JEE Main?
No. IIT admission is based on the JEE Advanced rank. JEE Main is needed to qualify for JEE Advanced, and its rank is used for NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes through JoSAA counselling.
Is JEE Advanced much harder than JEE Main?
Yes, generally. JEE Main tests speed across the full syllabus. JEE Advanced tests deeper understanding and multi-step problem solving, with question types that can change each year. Strong concepts matter more than memorised shortcuts.
Can ISC students write JEE Main and JEE Advanced?
Yes. ISC is a recognised Class 12 board. ISC students with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are eligible like CBSE or State Board students, subject to the marks and other conditions in the current year's notice.
What is JoSAA counselling?
JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) runs common counselling for IITs, NITs, IIITs and other government-funded technical institutes. Students fill choices of colleges and branches, and seats are allotted in rounds based on JEE ranks and preferences.
