IPMAT Preparation and CUET: A Guide for ISC Students

IPMAT preparation rarely comes up in Andhra Pradesh, where engineering and medicine get most of the attention. But many students in Rajahmundry are choosing commerce or humanities in Class 11 and aiming for management, economics, law or liberal arts degrees at national universities.
Two exams matter most for them: IPMAT and CUET. Parents often ask what these exams are, whether a child needs both, and when to start. This guide explains each one in simple terms.
QUICK ANSWER IPMAT is the entrance test for five-year integrated management programmes at some IIMs, and it tests quantitative aptitude and verbal ability. CUET UG, conducted by the NTA, is used for undergraduate admission at central universities and many others. ISC commerce and humanities students can prepare for both from Class 11, since the skills overlap. AT A GLANCE

What are IPMAT and CUET?
IPMAT (Integrated Programme in Management Aptitude Test) is conducted by IIM Indore for its five-year integrated management programme. Some other IIMs also use its scores, and IIM Rohtak conducts its own similar test. Students join straight after Class 12 and can graduate with an MBA-level qualification.
CUET UG (Common University Entrance Test) is conducted by the National Testing Agency. Central universities such as Delhi University use it, along with many state, deemed and private universities. Students pick a language, domain subjects linked to their Class 12 subjects, and a general test, depending on the course. Details are on nta.ac.in.
Parents in Rajahmundry should note one practical point: both tests are held at centres across India, and students choose preferred exam cities while applying. Register early so that a nearby centre is easier to get.
Point | IPMAT | CUET UG |
|---|---|---|

Eligibility rules, age limits and patterns change from year to year. Always read the current official bulletin before planning.
Which ISC students should consider these exams?
MEC (Maths, Economics, Commerce) students who enjoy numbers and want a management career should look seriously at IPMAT, with CUET as a strong second option.
MHEP (Maths/History, Economics, Political Science and similar) students aiming for economics, political science, history, journalism or liberal arts will find CUET the main route.
Students also considering law can prepare for CLAT alongside, as the reading and reasoning skills overlap. See our guide to CLAT preparation after Class 10.
If you are still deciding on a stream, read ISC streams explained: MPC, BiPC, MEC and MHEP.
A Class 11–12 plan for IPMAT preparation and CUET
Class 11, first term: Build reading. One editorial a day and a vocabulary notebook. Revise Class 9–10 maths: ratios, percentages, algebra, number systems.
Class 11, second term: Start timed quantitative aptitude and logical reasoning practice, three times a week.
Class 12, first term: Cover CUET domain subjects alongside the ISC syllabus. Begin sectional mock tests for IPMAT.
Class 12, second term: Full-length mocks every week, with careful review of errors. Balance with ISC board preparation.
After boards: Final mocks and revision before the test dates. Prepare for the IPMAT interview round if shortlisted.

Interviews and group discussions matter for many management programmes. Public speaking, debate and current-affairs reading help as much as mock tests.
Keep the plan realistic. Most students cannot do everything at once. Pick one main target, either IPMAT or a CUET-based university course, and treat the other as a backup that uses the same reading and maths practice. Review progress with a teacher every two months and adjust.
How FKGS supports commerce and humanities students
At Future Kids Global School in Rajamahendravaram, ISC commerce and humanities students have their own in-house programmes. Vibrant (MEC) prepares students for IPMAT, CA Foundation, CUET, CLAT, AILET and SLAT. Inspire (MHEP) prepares for a Civil Services foundation, CUET, CLAT, AILET and SLAT. Lingua Franca adds public speaking, debate, group discussion, MUN, mock parliament and personality development.
Among the school's alumni, Koti Asritha is now at IIM Rohtak, and in CLAT 2024 S. Prameela secured AIR 165 and joined NLIU Bhopal. Read more in FKGS alumni success stories.
Frequently asked questions
Can ISC commerce students apply for IPMAT?
Yes. IPMAT is generally open to Class 12 students from any stream who meet the age and marks criteria in the official notice. Strong maths and English matter more than the stream. Check the latest IIM Indore and IIM Rohtak eligibility rules.
Is CUET compulsory for all universities?
No. CUET is used by central universities and many state, deemed and private universities, but not all. Each university decides how it admits students. Check the admission page of every university your child is considering.
Should my child prepare for both IPMAT and CUET?
For most MEC students, yes. The skills overlap: reading, quantitative aptitude and reasoning. Preparing for both gives a wider choice of colleges without much extra work.
How much IPMAT preparation time is needed?
A comfortable plan gives about a year and a half: light reading and maths revision from the start of Class 11, then focused aptitude practice and mock tests from the second half of Class 11 through Class 12. Students who start later need more daily practice.
Does maths in Class 11–12 matter for IPMAT?
Yes. IPMAT has a strong quantitative section, and some institutes may expect maths in Class 12. Students who drop maths may find the quantitative section harder. Check the current eligibility notice.
